Smyrna Wildlife Trapper Tip of the Month:
Is It Okay To Feed A Baby Opossum?
Feeding a Baby Opossum
When you find a baby opossum out in the wild, separated from its mother, your first instinct might be to help it.
This is a common approach with all types of animals. No one wants to see them suffer, and everyone wants to help them if they can.
Knowing how to help them, though, is important. You want to do what is right for the animal, which means making smarter decisions.
When thinking about feeding the baby opossum, know whether that is a good idea at all. You want to do what is best for the opossum so that there is no harm and there are no problems.
Feeding an Opossum
An abandoned baby opossum may be hungry. Depending on how long it has been without its mother, it may have gone a day or more without any sort of nutrition or water.
This can quickly turn dangerous, putting the opossum’s life at risk. Without quick access to some sort of nutrition and some water, the opossum will likely die.
However, you cannot just give it anything. Like babies of any species, it requires specific foods. Something like milk, as an example, might not work. Same goes for solid foods.
Certain drinks mixed with water do work, and so does applesauce. Again, it depends on the age. One problem with this is that opossums need help to urinate and defecate.
It can be troublesome, and potentially dangerous, to navigate your way around feeding the baby opossums. Without proper knowledge, you may not know what to do or you may make mistakes. When it comes to an animal’s health, you want to do what is right.
What to Do
Instead of attempting to feed the baby opossum yourself, reach out to wildlife rehabilitators. Rehabilitators are trained professionals who can care for these animals. They have the knowledge, capabilities, and resources necessary for this.
They have the appropriate nutrition and knowledge for baby opossums, as well. When they take them in, they can do everything right. They can properly feed and care for the baby opossums until they are old enough to live on their own.
It might seem noble or caring to feed and care for baby opossums yourself, but you want to do what is right for them. Oftentimes, this means going to professionals who have everything necessary to care for the baby opossums into adulthood.
